2026 update: Swedish residence permit rules for doctoral candidates changed on 11 June 2026. The original article has been preserved below, with the new maintenance requirement, permit routes, study-progress rules, post-study options and permanent-residence provisions explained in the update section at the end.

If you have been admitted to doctoral studies in Sweden and are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you will likely need to apply for a residence permit before entering the country. This permit is intended for third-cycle education leading to a doctoral degree, licentiate, or equivalent qualification in the arts or sciences. Your family members may apply alongside you.

To qualify, you must hold a valid passport and be fully admitted to full-time, on-site doctoral studies. If your programme is less than one year, you will also need to obtain comprehensive health insurance. If your studies exceed one year, you should register in Sweden’s population register for access to healthcare. Financial maintenance is required at a minimum of SEK 10,584 per month (2025), and you must demonstrate sufficient funds for the entire duration of your intended stay.

Your application must include passport copies, a formal admission decision, a supplementary enrolment certificate issued by the institution, proof of health insurance (if applicable), and financial documentation. Acceptable financial sources include scholarships, doctoral grants, or personal bank assets. If your family is applying with you, you must submit relationship documentation and evidence of financial maintenance for each accompanying member.

To demonstrate that you meet the financial maintenance requirement, you must provide different documents depending on your source of support:

- Scholarships: Submit a certificate confirming the scholarship provider, your recipient status, the duration of the scholarship, the total and monthly amounts, the disbursement schedule, and how much is allocated for living expenses.

- Doctoral Grants: Include a certificate of enrolment from your university stating the amount you will receive each month and the duration of payments.

- Personal Bank Assets: Attach a recent bank statement (issued within four months of your intended permit start date) showing your name, the bank’s name, issue date, account balance, and currency. If your country requires authorization to withdraw these funds, you must also include such permission.

The residence permit can be issued for up to four years, depending on the length of your studies and your passport’s validity. An additional two weeks may be added for post-study arrangements. Permits can be extended if needed.

Key Points:

- Permit duration: Up to 4 years

- Financial requirement: SEK 10,584/month (2025)

- Full-time admission and enrolment confirmation required

- Health insurance required for studies under 12 months

- Family members may apply and are allowed to work

At Vedette Legal, we support doctoral candidates and their families with all aspects of the residence permit process, ensuring a compliant and smooth transition to life and study in Sweden.

###### Important Immigration Law Update – 2026

Sweden introduced several changes affecting residence permits for doctoral studies on 11 June 2026. These changes concern financial maintenance, study-progress requirements, switching permits from within Sweden, travel while an extension application is pending, post-study permits, permanent residence, and accompanying family members.

The following update applies specifically to doctoral candidates. Different rules may apply to bachelor’s and master’s students, visiting doctoral candidates, and people holding residence permits as researchers.

Updated Financial Maintenance Requirement for 2026

For applications submitted in 2026, a doctoral candidate must generally demonstrate access to at least SEK 10,656 per month for the intended permit period. This replaces the 2025 amount of SEK 10,584 per month stated in the original article.

The required amount may be reduced if the doctoral candidate receives free food or accommodation through the university, another educational institution, or an organisation responsible for international exchange:

– Free food: reduction of SEK 2,960 per month

– Free accommodation: reduction of SEK 4,736 per month

When family members apply with the doctoral candidate, additional financial support must normally be demonstrated:

– SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or cohabiting partner

SEK 2,664 per month for each child

###### Doctoral-Study Permits and Researcher Permits

A person admitted to doctoral studies in Sweden may continue to apply for a residence permit for doctoral studies. However, a doctoral candidate who has entered into a qualifying hosting agreement with an approved research principal may instead be eligible for a [residence permit as a researcher](https://vedette-legal.com/service/residence-permit-for-researchers-in-sweden/). If a researcher permit is granted, the rules governing researchers apply instead of the rules for doctoral-study permits.

This does not mean that every doctoral candidate must apply as a researcher. The correct permit category depends on the candidate’s admission, activities, and whether a qualifying hosting agreement exists. A visiting doctoral candidate who has not been admitted to a Swedish doctoral programme may fall under a different residence-permit category.

Work Alongside Doctoral Studies

The new 15-hour weekly work limit introduced for certain students below the doctoral level does not apply to holders of residence permits for doctoral studies.

According to the Swedish Migration Agency’s guidance, doctoral candidates may normally undertake teaching, research, or administrative duties alongside their studies, provided these duties do not exceed 20% of full-time work. Different conditions may apply to industrial doctoral candidates whose employment forms part of their doctoral education.

New Study-Progress Requirements

For a residence permit for doctoral studies granted on or after 11 June 2026, the doctoral candidate must make acceptable progress in their studies to qualify for an extension.

The expected study progress is generally:

– At least 62.5% of the expected study results during the first year of doctoral studies

– At least 75% of the expected study results during each subsequent year

When applying for an extension, the doctoral candidate will normally need a certificate from the supervisor or educational institution confirming the progress made.

An extension may still be possible when the required level of progress has not been achieved if there are special reasons for the delay. Each case is assessed individually.

Transitional Rules for Existing Permits

A doctoral-study permit granted before 11 June 2026 continues to be governed by the previous rules during that permit period.

The new requirements will generally become relevant when the doctoral candidate applies for a new permit or an extension after the legislative changes have taken effect.

Applying for a Researcher Permit from Within Sweden

A doctoral candidate may be able to apply for a [researcher permit](https://vedette-legal.com/service/residence-permit-for-researchers-in-sweden/) without leaving Sweden if the candidate:

– Holds a valid residence permit for doctoral studies

– Has completed at least one semester of doctoral studies

– Has entered into a qualifying hosting agreement

– Submits the application before the current permit expires

Completing one semester does not mean that the entire doctoral programme must be completed. It means that the doctoral candidate must have completed at least one semester within the ongoing doctoral programme before applying under this route.

Applying for a Work Permit or Another Residence Permit

A doctoral candidate may, in certain circumstances, apply for a work permit or another qualifying residence permit from within Sweden after completing at least two semesters of doctoral studies.

For this doctoral-studies rule, the entire doctoral programme does not have to be completed. A person enrolled in a longer doctoral programme may therefore potentially qualify after completing two doctoral semesters, provided all the other requirements for the new permit are met. The application must normally be submitted before the existing doctoral-study permit expires.

Travel While an Extension Application Is Pending

A doctoral candidate waiting for a decision on an extension may apply for a national entry visa, known as a D visa, if travel is necessary for activities connected to the doctoral studies or for a special event. The D visa must be granted before the doctoral candidate leaves Sweden. It is therefore important not to assume that a pending extension application automatically guarantees the right to return.

Post-Study Permit After Completing a Doctoral Programme

A person who has completed a doctoral programme in Sweden may apply for a residence permit to look for work or explore the possibility of starting a business.

From 11 June 2026, this permit may be granted for a period of at least 12 months and up to 18 months, provided all relevant requirements are met. The previous maximum period was 12 months.

Permanent Residence for Doctoral Candidates

The 2026 changes introduce an additional route through which doctoral candidates may qualify for permanent residence. A person may potentially qualify after holding relevant residence permits continuously for at least three years. Qualifying periods under permits for doctoral studies, research, research mobility, and the EU Blue Card may be combined when the legal conditions are satisfied.

The previous route based on holding a doctoral-study permit for four years during the previous seven years also remains available. Meeting the required permit period does not automatically result in permanent residence. The applicant must also satisfy the other requirements, including an intention to continue living in Sweden, the ability to support themselves, and the applicable conduct and good-behaviour requirements.

Rules Affecting Accompanying Family Members

Family members may continue to apply together with a doctoral candidate and may generally work in Sweden while holding a valid accompanying-family permit.

However, a family member’s residence permit may be affected if:

– The relationship with the doctoral candidate ends

– The doctoral candidate’s residence permit is withdrawn

– The family member is considered a threat to public order, public security, or public health

Withdrawal is not necessarily automatic. The Swedish Migration Agency must assess the circumstances of the individual case.

A family member already in Sweden on an accompanying-family permit may also be able to apply for their own residence permit for doctoral studies or research from within Sweden. Where the family member’s existing permit is connected to a doctoral candidate, the doctoral candidate must generally have completed at least one semester of doctoral studies, and the new application must be submitted before the family member’s current permit expires.

Permanent Residence for Family Members

A family member who has lived with the doctoral candidate in Sweden for at least three years may, in certain circumstances, apply for permanent residence at the same time as the doctoral candidate. The doctoral candidate’s eligibility for permanent residence is assessed first. The family must also meet the applicable financial requirements. Adult family members must normally demonstrate that they can support themselves. Family members aged 15 or older must satisfy the applicable conduct and good-behaviour requirements.
