Residence Permit for Researchers in Sweden

Important 2026 Update: New rules for researchers entered into force on 11 June 2026. The changes include a faster route to permanent residence, more opportunities to apply from within Sweden, and the possibility for doctoral candidates with a hosting agreement to apply under the researcher category. Different rules apply to short-term researcher mobility.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and have been invited by an approved Swedish institution to conduct research, you will generally need a residence permit. This applies whether you are arriving from outside the EU or already hold a research permit from another EU country and plan to spend a significant part of your research period in Sweden.

To qualify, you must have a valid passport and a signed hosting agreement with a research principal approved by the Swedish Research Council. You must spend at least 50% of your working hours on research and be able to support yourself financially during your stay. Health insurance is required if you will be in Sweden for less than one year.

If your stay is at least one year, you should register in Sweden’s population register to access healthcare and social services. Applications are submitted online. Once submitted, you may be asked to present your passport and provide biometric data at a Swedish embassy or consulate. Some applicants may be eligible for digital passport verification.

Family members, including spouses, cohabiting partners, and children under 18, can apply at the same time. If approved, they may also work in Sweden. Your income must be sufficient to support them as well.

Key Facts:

- Minimum financial requirement: SEK 9,700/month

- Must have a valid passport and signed hosting agreement

- At least 50% of work must be research (not teaching or admin)

- Approved institution must be recognized by the Swedish Research Council

- Health insurance required if staying less than 12 months

- Permit duration: up to 4 years, renewable

- Family members may apply and are allowed to work

- Most first-time applications must be made from outside Sweden

######
Important Immigration Law Update – 2026

New Swedish immigration rules for researchers entered into force on 11 June 2026. The changes affect doctoral candidates with hosting agreements, applications submitted from within Sweden, permanent residence and certain travel arrangements while an application is pending.

Who Can Apply for a Researcher Residence Permit?

You can apply for a residence permit as a researcher if you have a doctoral degree or are qualified to begin doctoral studies and have been invited to conduct research in Sweden.

You must have a hosting agreement with a research principal approved by the Swedish Research Council. A research principal may be a Swedish university, another research institution or a business approved to receive researchers.

From 11 June 2026, a person admitted to [doctoral studies](https://vedette-legal.com/service/residence-permit-for-doctoral-studies-in-sweden/) in Sweden or another country may also apply under the researcher category if they have a hosting agreement with an approved research principal.

- A doctoral candidate without a hosting agreement will normally need to apply under the separate residence-permit category for doctoral studies.

- At Least Half of Your Working Hours Must Be Research

- At least 50% of your working hours must be devoted to research.

- Teaching, administrative duties or other work within the research group do not count as research when calculating whether this requirement is satisfied.

Financial-Maintenance Requirement

You must have sufficient financial means for your entire intended stay in Sweden and for your return journey.

The current maintenance requirement for researchers is at least SEK 9,700 per month.

How Long Can a Researcher Residence Permit Be Granted?

- A residence permit for research can be granted for a maximum of four years at a time.

- The permit cannot be granted beyond the validity of your hosting agreement or your passport.

- The residence permit can be extended if you continue to meet the applicable requirements.

- If you hold a research permit issued by another EU country and conduct part of your research in Sweden under the long-term mobility rules, your Swedish permit cannot extend beyond the validity of the permit issued by the other EU country.

Research Visits Lasting Less Than Three Months

If you will conduct research in Sweden for less than three months, you do not need a residence permit for research. However, depending on your citizenship, you may need an entry visa to travel to Sweden. The visa requirement must be checked separately.

Short-Term Researcher Mobility from Another EU Country

If you hold a residence permit for research issued by another EU country, you do not need a Swedish residence permit when conducting part of your research in Sweden for a maximum of 180 days within a 360-day period.

This is the short-term researcher-mobility route and must not be confused with a Swedish residence permit for research involving a longer stay.

If your research in Sweden will exceed the short-mobility period, you will generally need to apply under the rules for research involving long-term mobility.

Applying for a Research Permit from Within Sweden

The main rule is that a first-time residence permit must be applied for and granted before entering Sweden. However, the rules introduced in 2026 allow more researchers to apply from within Sweden.

You may be able to apply while remaining in Sweden if you hold another valid Swedish permit, including certain permits for studies, employment, self-employment or job-seeking after completed studies or research.

A person with a research permit issued by another EU country who intends to conduct part of a research project in Sweden may also apply while in Sweden.

Certain family members of students, doctoral candidates, researchers and people holding post-study or post-research job-seeking permits may apply from within Sweden if they independently qualify for a researcher permit.

An application submitted from within Sweden must normally be made before the existing permit expires, and the conditions of the previous permit must have been fulfilled.

Applying for an Extension

You can apply for an extension no earlier than four months before your current residence permit expires. You must submit the application before the expiry date.

If you apply after your permit has expired, you will not normally be allowed to work while waiting for a decision. You may also lose access to certain social benefits, and the application may be refused because you remained in Sweden without a valid residence permit.

To receive an extension, you must continue to have a valid passport, a hosting agreement with an approved research principal and sufficient financial means for your stay and return journey.

Permanent Residence for Researchers

- From 11 June 2026, you may qualify for permanent residence after holding qualifying permits continuously for at least three years.

- The three-year period may consist of residence permits for research, research involving long-term mobility, doctoral studies or a Swedish EU Blue Card. Periods under these categories may be combined if the qualifying period is continuous.

- If the qualifying permit periods were not continuous, permanent residence may instead be possible after a total of four years under the applicable rules. A separate route also remains available after holding qualifying work-related permits for a total of four years during the past seven years.

- In addition to completing the required permit period, you must be able to support yourself financially on a sustainable basis and meet the applicable good-conduct requirement.

- You can apply for permanent residence when extending your researcher permit or as soon as you meet the requirements, even if your existing permit remains valid.

- If you apply for permanent residence together with an extension at the end of your current permit period, the Swedish Migration Agency recommends applying no earlier than 30 days before the current permit expires. This is because the Agency cannot decide the permanent-residence application until the existing permit has expired.

- If permanent residence is granted, it replaces your temporary researcher permit. If permanent residence is refused but you meet the requirements for an extension, you may still be granted an extended temporary permit.

Research-Related Travel While an Application Is Pending

- The 2026 rules introduced a possibility for certain researchers and doctoral candidates to apply from within Sweden for a national visa before undertaking necessary research-related travel abroad.

- This may apply when a timely application for an extension, another qualifying research or doctoral permit, or permanent residence is pending.

- The national visa must be applied for from within Sweden and issued before departure. It is not granted automatically, and the travel must be connected to the applicant’s research or doctoral education.
