EU Blue Card in Sweden

EU Blue Card in Sweden

The EU Blue Card is a residence permit for non-EU/EEA professionals who have been offered a highly qualified position in Sweden. It allows you to live and work in Sweden and offers certain mobility rights within the EU. To be eligible, you must have a university degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS credits or five years of relevant professional experience. Your employment must be in a qualified role with a minimum contract duration of six months, and your salary must meet the current threshold of SEK 49,875/month (as of 2025), which is 1.25 times the Swedish average.

If you already hold a valid work permit in Sweden, you may apply for an EU Blue Card from within the country. The permit is typically issued for 9 to 24 months and can be extended. Family members, spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, and children under 18, may apply alongside you and are permitted to work in Sweden.

While the EU Blue Card facilitates mobility within the EU and may count toward long-term EU residence, please note that Sweden does not count Blue Card residence time from other EU countries toward Swedish permanent residency.

In the event of job loss, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency. You may be granted a grace period of 3 to 6 months to secure new qualifying employment, depending on how long you’ve held the Blue Card. However, the Blue Card does not permit self-employment. If you intend to start your own business in Sweden, you will need to apply for a separate residence permit for self-employed individuals.
