Job Seeking After Completing Studies in Sweden

Residence Permit After Completing Studies in Sweden

2026 update: Swedish rules for residence permits after completed studies changed on 11 June 2026. The original article has been preserved below. Updated information about the financial requirement, permit duration, completed-study requirement, address reporting, work rights, and changing to another permit is provided in the update section at the end.

If you have completed a higher education programme in Sweden, you may be eligible for a residence permit that allows you to remain in the country to look for work or investigate the possibility of starting your own business. This opportunity is also open to students who completed part of their studies in Sweden under a residence permit issued by another EU country, provided they studied in Sweden for at least two semesters.

To be eligible, you must have a valid passport and submit your application before your current permit expires. You need to have completed a full programme of higher education (at least two semesters) with passing grades. You must also have sufficient financial means for your stay, amounting to at least SEK 10,584 per month (2025), and comprehensive health insurance if your total stay in Sweden is less than one year.

Applications must include passport copies, a degree certificate or an official transcript confirming completed studies, and documentation of financial means. Doctoral students should also include a certificate from their supervisor. If applying with family, you must include proof of relationship and financial support for your entire household.

This residence permit is valid for up to 12 months and cannot be extended. If your family applies with you, their permits will match yours in duration but will not exceed the validity of their passports. Adult family members and children turning 16 during the current year are permitted to work in Sweden.

Key Points:

  • Permit duration: Up to 12 months (non-renewable)
  • Financial requirement: SEK 10,584/month (2025)
  • Must apply before current permit expires
  • Health insurance required for stays under 12 months
  • Family members may apply and are allowed to work
  • Application fees: SEK 1,500 (adults), SEK 750 (children)

Important Immigration Law Update – 2026

Sweden introduced changes affecting residence permits for looking for work or exploring the possibility of starting a business after completed studies. Most of the legislative changes took effect on 11 June 2026.

This update applies to people who have completed qualifying higher education in Sweden, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programmes. It does not cover the separate residence permit available after completing research under a researcher permit.

Updated Financial Maintenance Requirement for 2026

For applications submitted in 2026, applicants must generally demonstrate access to at least SEK 10,656 per monthfor the entire period covered by the application.
This replaces the 2025 amount of SEK 10,584 per month stated in the original article.

The required amount may be reduced if the applicant receives free food or accommodation through a higher education institution or an organisation involved in international exchange:

  • Free food: reduction of SEK 2,960 per month
  • Free accommodation: reduction of SEK 4,736 per month

When family members apply with the graduate, additional financial support must normally be demonstrated:

  • SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or cohabiting partner
  • SEK 2,664 per month for each child

The Swedish Migration Agency will assess the family’s overall ability to support itself during the intended stay.

Meaning of Completed Higher Education

  • For bachelor’s and master’s-level studies, the applicant must have completed the entire higher education programme to which they were originally admitted. The completed programme must correspond to at least two semesters of study, and the applicant must have received passing grades in all required courses.
  • The two-semester requirement describes the minimum length of the completed programme. It does not mean that completing two semesters of an unfinished, longer programme is sufficient.
For example, a person admitted to a four-semester master’s programme must normally complete the entire four-semester programme. Completing only the first two semesters does not satisfy the requirement for this post-study residence permit.
  • Higher vocational education is not considered higher education for this purpose.
  • A person who has completed a doctoral programme may also qualify under the rules for residence permits after completed studies.
  • Studies Undertaken Through Another EU Country
  • A person may also qualify if they held a residence permit for higher education issued by another EU country and completed part of their programme in Sweden under qualifying mobility arrangements.
  • The applicant must normally have completed at least two semesters of the programme in Sweden. The higher education programme itself must also have been completed.

Applications Before Final Grades Are Issued

Applicants must submit their application before their current residence permit expires.

If the study permit is about to expire but the applicant has not yet received all final grades, the application should still be submitted before the permit expires. The applicant may subsequently supplement the application with evidence confirming that the programme has been completed with passing grades.

If the applicant has completed their studies while an application to extend the study permit remains pending, it may not be necessary to submit a separate application. The applicant can contact the Swedish Migration Agency and request assistance in changing the basis of the pending application.

Permit Duration Based on the Level of Study

The permit period now depends on the level of the completed programme:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s graduates may receive a residence permit for up to one year.
  • Doctoral graduates may receive a residence permit for at least 12 months and up to 18 months.

The longer period for doctoral graduates applies from 11 June 2026. Previously, the maximum permit period was 12 months for all graduates covered by this category.
A permit cannot be granted beyond the validity of the applicant’s passport.

This post-study permit cannot normally be extended. Applicants who want to remain in Sweden must qualify for and apply for another type of residence permit before the post-study permit expires.

New Address-Reporting Requirement

A person granted a post-study residence permit after completing studies below the doctoral level on or after 11 June 2026 must report their residential address in Sweden to the Swedish Migration Agency.

The address must normally be reported:

  1. Within 30 days after entering Sweden with the permit
  2. Within 30 days after the permit is granted if the applicant is already in Sweden
  3. Within 30 days after moving to a new address

The requirement does not apply to a person who is registered in the Swedish Population Register. This particular address-reporting requirement does not apply when the qualifying completed programme was at the doctoral level. Separate population-registration obligations may nevertheless apply.

Right to Work During the Post-Study Period
A person holding a residence permit after completed studies is exempt from the requirement to hold a separate work permit during the validity of the post-study permit. The 15-hour weekly limit introduced for certain bachelor’s and master’s students does not apply after the post-study permit has been granted.

A student who completes a qualifying higher education programme while their study permit remains valid may also work more than 15 hours per week during the remaining validity of that permit, provided the student is not applying for another residence permit for bachelor’s or master’s-level studies.

If employment will become the basis for continued residence in Sweden, the person must apply for the appropriate work permit before the current permit expires.

Changing to a Work Permit

A person who finds qualifying employment while holding a valid post-study permit may apply for a work permit from within Sweden.
The applicant must normally:

  1. Hold a valid passport
  2. Hold a valid residence permit for studies or for looking for work after completed studies
  3. Have completed a qualifying higher education programme, or at least two semesters of doctoral studies in Sweden
  4. Submit the application before the current residence permit expires
  5. Have a signed employment contract
  6. Have employment conditions and insurance that satisfy the work-permit requirements

From 1 June 2026, the general work-permit salary requirement is normally 90% of Sweden’s median salary at the time of application. Certain applicants submitting their first work-permit application while they still hold a student or researcher permit may be exempt from the general salary requirement. A person applying after receiving a post-study job-seeking permit must satisfy the work-permit rules applicable to their circumstances at the time of application.
