Residence Permit for Researchers in Sweden

Residence Permit for Researchers in Sweden

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and have been invited by an approved Swedish institution to conduct research, you will generally need a residence permit. This applies whether you are arriving from outside the EU or already hold a research permit from another EU country and plan to spend a significant part of your research period in Sweden.

To qualify, you must have a valid passport and a signed hosting agreement with a research principal approved by the Swedish Research Council. You must spend at least 50% of your working hours on research and be able to support yourself financially during your stay. Health insurance is required if you will be in Sweden for less than one year.

If your stay is at least one year, you should register in Sweden’s population register to access healthcare and social services. Applications are submitted online. Once submitted, you may be asked to present your passport and provide biometric data at a Swedish embassy or consulate. Some applicants may be eligible for digital passport verification.

Family members, including spouses, cohabiting partners, and children under 18, can apply at the same time. If approved, they may also work in Sweden. Your income must be sufficient to support them as well.
