Residence Permit for Self-Employed Individuals in Sweden

Residence Permit for Self-Employed Individuals in Sweden

If you are a non-EU/EEA national looking to establish or operate your own business in Sweden, you may be eligible to apply for a residence permit as a self-employed person. This permit allows you to reside in Sweden and manage your business activities independently. Your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, and children under 18 can apply for residence permits at the same time.

To qualify, you must have substantial experience in your business sector and demonstrate competence in running a business. You should also possess a working knowledge of Swedish or English. If your business involves direct contact with clients or suppliers in Sweden, proficiency in Swedish is especially important.

You must have decisive influence over the business, holding at least 51% ownership, and be actively involved in its day-to-day operations. A sound, credible business plan and financial projections are crucial, as the Swedish Migration Agency will assess the feasibility and sustainability of your business proposal. Additionally, established customer relationships or a network within your industry is expected.

Financial preparedness is key. You must show that you have at least SEK 200,000 in your name to support yourself over two years. If your spouse is accompanying you, an additional SEK 100,000 is required, and SEK 50,000 for each accompanying child. Furthermore, you need sufficient capital to start or purchase the business and cover operating expenses. These funds must be your own; loans are generally not accepted.

Your application must include bank statements, proof of funds, incorporation documents, partnership agreements or share registers, contracts with suppliers and clients, business premises agreements, financial statements, and supporting documentation on your qualifications and experience. If you plan to purchase a business, provide a signed purchase agreement and proof of payment.

Family members must also submit passport copies and documentation proving your relationship, such as marriage or cohabitation certificates, along with financial proof for their maintenance.

Who Can Apply from Inside Sweden

While most applicants must apply from outside Sweden, there are exceptions. You may apply from within Sweden if:

  1. You hold a valid work permit and apply for a self-employed residence permit before your current permit expires, and all conditions of the previous permit have been fulfilled.
  2. You have a residence permit for university or higher education and have completed at least 30 ECTS credits or one semester of doctoral studies.
  3. You have a residence permit to search for employment after completing your studies.
  4. You have a residence permit for highly qualified individuals to explore work or business opportunities in Sweden.
  5. In all such cases, you must submit your application before your current residence permit expires.

The initial residence permit can be granted for up to two years, but never beyond the validity of your passport. Permits can be extended, and your family members may be granted the same duration. Adult family members and children who turn at least 16 during the year are permitted to work in Sweden.
