Residence Permit for Doctoral Studies in Sweden

Residence Permit for Doctoral Studies in Sweden

If you have been admitted to doctoral studies in Sweden and are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you will likely need to apply for a residence permit before entering the country. This permit is intended for third-cycle education leading to a doctoral degree, licentiate, or equivalent qualification in the arts or sciences. Your family members may apply alongside you.

To qualify, you must hold a valid passport and be fully admitted to full-time, on-site doctoral studies. If your programme is less than one year, you will also need to obtain comprehensive health insurance. If your studies exceed one year, you should register in Sweden’s population register for access to healthcare. Financial maintenance is required at a minimum of SEK 10,584 per month (2025), and you must demonstrate sufficient funds for the entire duration of your intended stay.

Your application must include passport copies, a formal admission decision, a supplementary enrolment certificate issued by the institution, proof of health insurance (if applicable), and financial documentation. Acceptable financial sources include scholarships, doctoral grants, or personal bank assets. If your family is applying with you, you must submit relationship documentation and evidence of financial maintenance for each accompanying member.

To demonstrate that you meet the financial maintenance requirement, you must provide different documents depending on your source of support:

  1. Scholarships: Submit a certificate confirming the scholarship provider, your recipient status, the duration of the scholarship, the total and monthly amounts, the disbursement schedule, and how much is allocated for living expenses.
  2. Doctoral Grants: Include a certificate of enrolment from your university stating the amount you will receive each month and the duration of payments.
  3. Personal Bank Assets: Attach a recent bank statement (issued within four months of your intended permit start date) showing your name, the bank’s name, issue date, account balance, and currency. If your country requires authorization to withdraw these funds, you must also include such permission.

The residence permit can be issued for up to four years, depending on the length of your studies and your passport’s validity. An additional two weeks may be added for post-study arrangements. Permits can be extended if needed.
