Residence Permit After Completing Research in Sweden

If you have completed your research in Sweden under a residence permit for research, you may be eligible to stay in the country to look for employment or explore the possibility of starting your own business. This residence permit is specifically designed for former researchers and provides a pathway to continue your professional journey in Sweden.

 

To qualify, you must have a valid passport and submit your application before your current residence permit expires. You must provide proof that your research has been completed and that your last residence permit was for research purposes in Sweden or another EU country. You also need to demonstrate sufficient financial means (at least SEK 9,700 per month) and hold or have applied for comprehensive health insurance that covers your entire stay.

 

Applications must include correctly made copies of your passport, a confirmation from your research principal that your research is completed, proof of financial maintenance, and documentation of valid health insurance. If your family is applying with you, you must also submit documents proving your relationship and copies of their passports.

 

This permit is valid for 12 months and cannot be extended. If your family applies with you, their permits will match the duration of yours, but never exceed the validity of their passports. Adult family members and children over 16 will be permitted to work in Sweden.

Important Immigration Law Update – 2026

Sweden introduced new rules affecting researchers and residence permits after completed research on 11 June 2026. The changes concern the length of the post-research permit, applications for new permits from within Sweden, permanent residence, and accompanying family members.

This update applies specifically to people who completed research while holding a residence permit for research. It does not apply to the separate residence permit available after completing higher education or doctoral studies under a student permit.

 

Eligibility After Completing Research
A person may qualify for a residence permit after completed research if they:

1. Hold a valid passport
2. Have completed their research
3. Hold, or most recently held, a residence permit for research in Sweden
4. Intend to look for work or explore the possibility of starting a business
5. Apply before their current residence permit expires
6. Have enough money for their stay and return journey
7. Have, or have applied for, comprehensive health insurance when required

The applicant must provide confirmation from the research principal showing that the research has been completed.

 

Researchers with Permits Issued by Another EU Country

A person may also qualify if they held a residence permit for research issued by another EU country. The applicant must have completed their research and must have spent part of the permit period in Sweden conducting part of that research. If the research was mainly conducted in another EU country, confirmation of completed research must normally be provided by the research principal in that country.

 

Financial Maintenance Requirement

• The applicant must demonstrate access to at least SEK 9,700 per month for the entire period covered by the application.
• The applicant must also have enough money to pay for their return journey.
• This financial requirement is specific to the residence permit available after completed research. It should not be confused with the different maintenance requirement applying to students or graduates after completed higher education.

Comprehensive Health Insurance

If the applicant’s total period in Sweden will be less than one year, they must have, or have applied for, comprehensive health insurance.

The insurance must cover:

1. Urgent and other medical care
2. Hospitalisation
3. Emergency dental care
4. Medical repatriation to the applicant’s country of origin

The insurance must remain valid throughout the relevant period in Sweden.

A person whose total period in Sweden is longer than one year may be eligible for registration in the Swedish Population Register, which provides access to Swedish healthcare and dental care.

 

Extended Permit Period from 11 June 2026

• From 11 June 2026, a residence permit after completed research may be granted for at least 12 months and up to 18 months.
• This replaces the previous rule under which the permit was granted for 12 months.
• The exact permit period depends on how long the applicant meets all the relevant requirements, including the financial maintenance and health-insurance requirements.
• The permit cannot be valid beyond the expiry date of the applicant’s passport.

 

The Permit Cannot Be Extended

• A residence permit after completed research cannot be extended.
• A person who wants to remain in Sweden must qualify for and apply for another type of residence permit before the post-research permit expires.
• Right to Work During the Post-Research Period
• A person who receives a residence permit after completed research has the right to live and work in Sweden while the permit remains valid. However, if a particular job or business will become the basis for continued residence in Sweden, the person must apply for the appropriate new permit before the post-research permit expires.

 

Starting a New Researcher Position

A person who obtains a new position as a researcher with an approved research principal and enters into a qualifying hosting agreement must apply for a residence permit for research.

The application may be submitted from within Sweden if:

1. The post-research permit remains valid
2. The application is submitted before that permit expires
3. All the requirements for a researcher permit are satisfied
4. Obtaining a researcher position does not automatically convert a post-research permit into a researcher permit.

 

Changing to a Work Permit

A person who finds employment that is not covered by the researcher-permit rules may be able to apply for a work permit from within Sweden before the post-research permit expires. The employment and employer must satisfy the work-permit requirements applying at the time of the application.

 

From 1 June 2026, the general requirements include:

1. A signed employment contract
2. Salary amounting to at least 90% of Sweden’s median salary at the time of application, unless a specific exemption applies
3. Employment conditions that are not worse than those established by Swedish collective agreements or professional or industry practice
4. The required employment-related insurance
5. Comprehensive health insurance when required for a stay lasting no more than one year

The work-permit application must be submitted before the post-research permit expires.

 

Changing to a Self-Employment Permit

1. A person holding a valid post-research residence permit may potentially apply for a residence permit to run their own business without leaving Sweden.
2. The application must be submitted before the post-research permit expires. The applicant must satisfy all the separate requirements for a self-employed-person permit.
3. Permission to explore the possibility of starting a business during the post-research period does not automatically guarantee that a self-employment permit will be granted.

 

Applying for Doctoral Studies from Within Sweden

From 11 June 2026, a person holding a residence permit after completed research may apply from within Sweden for a residence permit for doctoral studies.

The applicant must:

• Apply before the current permit expires
• Be admitted to qualifying doctoral studies
• Meet all the requirements for a doctoral-study permit

The post-research permit does not automatically convert into a doctoral-study permit. The new application will be assessed independently.

 

Applying for Another Researcher Permit from Within Sweden

1. A holder of a valid post-research permit may also apply for a residence permit for research from within Sweden.
2. The applicant must have a qualifying hosting agreement with an approved research principal, meet the other researcher-permit requirements, and apply before the current permit expires.

 

New Three-Year Route to Permanent Residence

From 11 June 2026, a person may qualify for permanent residence after holding qualifying permits continuously for at least three years.

The qualifying permit categories are:

1. Residence permits for research
2. Residence permits for doctoral studies
3. Swedish EU Blue Cards

Periods under these categories may be combined. For example, time spent under a doctoral-study permit may be combined with time spent under a researcher permit. Meeting the required permit period does not automatically result in permanent residence. The applicant must also meet the other requirements, including the applicable financial maintenance and conduct requirements.

Time Spent on the Post-Research Permit

The post-research job-seeking permit is not included in the statutory list of permits that count toward the new three-consecutive-year route. The qualifying list covers researcher permits, long-stay research-mobility permits, doctoral-study permits, and Swedish EU Blue Cards.

Time spent solely under the post-research job-seeking permit should therefore not be treated as qualifying time under this particular three-year route.

 

Existing Four-Year Permanent-Residence Route

The existing route based on holding qualifying work-related permits for a total of four years during the previous seven years remains available.
Under this route, the four years do not have to be consecutive, but they must fall within the relevant seven-year period.
The post-research job-seeking permit is a residence permit with permission to work, but it is not itself a work permit. It should therefore not automatically be counted as qualifying work-permit time under the four-year route.

 

Accompanying Family Members

A spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner, and children under 18 may apply with the former researcher.

If approved, their residence permits may be granted for the same period as the main applicant’s permit, but not beyond the validity of their passports.

Adult family members and children who will turn at least 16 during the current year may work in Sweden.

Family members must hold valid passports, and the main applicant must be granted the post-research permit before the accompanying-family applications can be approved.

Family Members Applying for Their Own Permits

From 11 June 2026, a qualifying family member may, in certain circumstances, apply from within Sweden for:

• Their own residence permit for research
• Their own residence permit for doctoral studies

This option is available to qualifying family members of people holding several research- or study-related permits, including family members of a person with a residence permit after completed research. The family member must satisfy all the requirements for the new permit and apply before their existing family permit expires.
